Some Became Hollow Tubes is an experimental post-rock collaboration between guitarist Eric Quach (thisquietarmy, Tempête Solaire, Pangea de Futura, Hypnodrome Ensemble) and drummer Aidan Girt (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Exhaust, One Speed Bike, Set Fire To Flames) that blends amp-lit improvised drones and atmospheric textures with motoric drums, pummeling forward in dynamic, vibrant cycles. Formed in 2019, the group has carried its torch creating powerful soundscapes for turbulent political times across Canada, Europe, and the UK. This album was recorded, mixed, and mastered first by Aidan and Eric between 2021 and 2023 in the Mile-Ex and the Lower Laurentians of Quebec, then re-mastered for vinyl release by Harris Newman at Grey Market Mastering.

Musically, anyone familiar with thisquietarmy’s darkly brooding guitar loops and fuzzed out dronescapes, or Aidan’s reliable longform groovemaking in Godspeed, will feel right at home in this music. But it’s the innate connection between these two men where this project becomes its own. Filling pockets of sound the other has left behind, cyclic chordal riffing timed to perfection at each turn-around, two eventually coalesces into one to form a self-sustaining force of propulsion the longer their jams go on. This is a kiln firing at one thousand degrees; a variable pitch propeller hydrodynamically rechanneling seawater; an aqueous composite of molten iron ore slowly transforming into steel in a blast furnace.

Aidan’s apocalyptic track titles brace the listener for the kind of mindset required to engage with this album fully. It’s not pessimism, it's a reality check. Portraitised in music here are the sounds of armored drones flying overhead raining death from above onto the most vulnerable, voiceless, and misrepresented populations of our planet, as well the earth-moving heavy machinery ripping concrete off our streets here in our quiet river-island city of Montréal, and as well the rumbling of mounting unrest in our hearts as we continually find ourselves watching the destruction of everything we’ve collectively built every time we draw the blinds of our windows.

On stage, these connections between collaborators, between band and audience, between politics and protest, and between sound and space, cement. This band’s music truly comes alive in the echoes and shadows of a live room. Some Become Hollow Tubes will take their improvised drones and drums on the road in celebration of this release with stops in Montreal, Arnprior, Stratford, Wendover and Gatineau."
